Sri Lankan military says its former head Sarath Fonseka will go on trial next week. Fonseka was arrested after he lost the presidential election against President Mahinda Rajapakse.
The government has charged Fonseka with trying to interfere in politics while he was head of the armed forces.
The government says the general credited with defeating the Tamil rebels, will be tried separately for plotting to overthrow the government.
But Fonseka has denied all charges and said he will contest in the country's Parliamentary election on April 18.
But experts on Sri Lanka say he could be charged before this time and would not qualify to contest in the elections.
The trial o Fonseka which is expected to be brief will take place at a navy complex in Colombo where he is being detained.
