Kathryn Bigelow named best director for The Hurt Locker
Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker swept up six Oscars including best film at the annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the award for best direction. She was just the fifth woman nominee in the history of the Oscar awards.
Shortly after she was named Bigelow said, 'its the moment of a lifetime'.
James Cameron's Avatar picked up just three awards for technical excellence. Cameron paid tributes to Bigelow to whome he was briefly married but they had made many films together.
Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock won the top acting Oscars for their roles in Crazy Heart and The Blind Side.
