Powerful earthquake strikes central Chile

A powerful earthquake has struck central Chile. Reports say at least 82 people have been killed and casualty figure is expected to rise.


The quake had a power of 8.8 as measured on the Richter Scale. It hit the region 91 kilometers north-east of Concepcion city.

The capital Santiago lies about 317 kilometers southwest of quake area. The airport there has been closed.

The president of Chile has said a large wave affected a group of islands in the south. She has appealed to the Chilean people to remain calm.

The United States issued a tsunami warning for countries near Chile.
