The 24-hour campaign will raise funds to light up villages without electricity
NDTV's 2nd Greenathon campaign opened Saturday evening in Chennai and across India. The campaign is primarily aimed at lighting up villages that still do not have electricity.
About 1.6 billion people in the world live without power and 25 percent of them in India.
In Chennai, the NDTV Greenathon backed by car maker Toyota is taking place at the Elliot's beach.
The campaign will last till 7 pm Sunday and includes various activities including beach cleaning by volunteers.
Member of Parliament Kanimozhi of the governing DMK party, film personalities environment activists and students joined the campaign.
Similiar campaigns are also taking place in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and other cities.
The money raised by the Greenathon will be used to set up solar energy systems to provide electricty to villages that struggle in darkness and poverty.
