It is high time to change the names who are still to remind British Rulers. There is a road in T.Nagar by name Burkit Road. No one knows who is Burkit and also the need for remembering his contribution .It is high time to change the name. Why not the name of Burkit Road to be changed as 'Maha Kavi Sa.Thu.Su. Yogiar' Road? He was Tamil Scholer(known as Bala Bharathi) and freedom fighter and his works have been Nationalised by Honerable Chief Minister Dr. Kalaignar. Yogiar lived in T.Nagar that too very near Burkit Road. The worshipful Mayor/ council, may pass a resolution to change the name of Burkit Road to honour the Tamil Scholer, and get the approval of Government of Tamilnadu in this regars as per the existing Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act,1919.

We need to look into the impact of this decision, for a mere change in name is not going to change the way people are going to call the street. For instance, the Rajiv Gandhi Salai is almost a pseudonym to the stretch that extends from Madhya Kailash to the end of the IT corridor. Even the real estate cos. advertise it with its better known name : OMR.

We not only need change in name's of the roads but the quality of roads , rules which has to be followed while laying roads

change we need , not in the name of the roads but in the violations and encroachments on the road.

Being a tamil myself, i suggest the following :1) make Tamil compulsory as one subject from 1st standard to 6th - IN ALL SCHOOLS of TN2) at the same time, encourage atleast 2 more languages to be learnt by all studentsso many of our friends' sons/daughters/grandchildren do not even know to speak English, even though they are supposed to be tamilians !!WE SHOULD LOVE OUR LANGUAGE, at the SAME TIME, LET US HAVE NATIONAL/GLOBAL OUTLOOK

Good move..... even there is street called "Blackers street....It reminds of racism.. let name get change wats in it... after all the new names will remind of our own culture.... those who say it is ridiculous get adictionary and see the meaning before you post.... and those who are talkin and commenting on auto drivers better go and lodge a complaint with police... this is definitely a good move

Change the attitude of the Auto Drivers in Chennai. Make them put the meter. They are such uncultured, Dishonest and such cheats. To go From Mylapore to Alwarpet Via Luz Church Road auto guys are asking for 60 Rupees. Is this the way we have to be treated? What is the TN govt doing? Instead of changing the names of roads they should change the rules and bring a rule where all autos must follow the meter.

Whats the use of changing the names of roads? It wont change anything, First of all the TN govt needs to change Chennai City

Changing of Names of the streets are with in the powers of the Corporation Councils. It is not only ridiculous but also misuse of powers to remove English name boards in Chennai. Infact the Mayor who does not have any directional executive powers is giving ultimatum till 20th June. It is not known under which clause he is going to proceed? Has the Mayor got any orders form judiciary? The Chennai City Municipal Corporation ACt 1919 is nearly CENTUARY old and has lot of clauses applicable pre Independance days. Nobody has gone through the good old act,1919. The Act itself is only in English and NO Tamil copy of the same is available. Atleast the media may go through the 1919Act and piont out to the Corporation of Chennai the need for replacing the act to suit the present day environment.

Its ridiculous. Such names are all heritage, old memories of British Rule in India. Its they who created new roads and named after the then prominent persons . They did not change Tamizh names and named after the British. After or before Chemmozhi vizha, let the present Govt. change or name the streets or roads after Tamizh prominent personalities in villages or districts.
