'GODDYWOOD: CONMEN OR GODMEN?

We call them Swamiji, we lay our hearts at their feet as they perform poojas and homams and say prayers. We part with our savings to donate to their cause. Welcome to Goddywood-the world of conmen who masquerade as Godmen. These religious entrepreneurs as it were have made spirituality a lucrative profession without any capital! But what about the genuine spiritual Gurus? Are we guilty of making knee jerk sweeping generalisations. The recent Swami Nithyananda sex, denial and videotape saga has angered some, shattered the hopes and faith of many and raised a fundamental question-do we need a cultic cocktail? Do we need Godmen?  Sanjay Pinto feels the pulse of Chennai on NDTV-Hindu.

Nice debate and you patiently hear everyone's view unlike other political debates where everyone shouts and even the anchor interferes often with nothing coming out finally. Nithyananda is a personification of the sub-conscious desires of his devotees just like everyone has their matinee idols or cricket heroes. We are fed with hero worship, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Gandhi etc.. What if some great cricketing hero gets into scandal tomorrow ? Where will his fans keep their face ? So instead of hero worship or trying to become a hero, if one finds the Truth of oneself and this life, that is true spiritualism where you get freedom and can stand alone. So the moral is that the heroes and devotees are in the same boat. People in the time of distress seek God or Godmen. Unless we have found spirit nature, we will be psychologically dependent on someone or other throughout life.
